A café in northern China has found itself at the center of an online controversy after displaying signs suggesting that men who are unwilling to spend money on women are not “real men.”
A café beside a park in Hebei Province has sparked controversy over promotional signs that some people say mock and discriminate against customers.
One of the signs read:
“Free photo check-ins are for women only. Couples must make a purchase and take a seat before taking photos, because we can’t stand men who are unwilling to spend money on women.”
The café also reportedly displayed messages saying that “men earn money for women to spend” and that being a woman’s support is what makes someone a “real man.”
It also wrote a rhyming verse that appeared to criticize male customers who were unwilling to spend money on their female companions.
Some women said the signs made them uncomfortable
The wording quickly attracted criticism online.
“I don’t know why, but seeing this sign makes me very uncomfortable,” one female social-media user said. “I’m a woman, but I wouldn’t bring my boyfriend here to take photos.”
Other users questioned whether the signs were mocking or discriminating against consumers.

Café says there has been a misunderstanding
On September 1, a person in charge of the café confirmed to a reporter that the signs were genuine but denied that the business had discriminated against consumers.
She said there had been a misunderstanding and that the café had recently received many malicious online reviews.
The person in charge also said she was pregnant and had recently been resting at home, so she had not paid close attention to what had been happening at the café.
The controversial messages and the café’s response have continued to draw discussion online.
