More than 900 days after a young Chinese nurse was killed by her boyfriend when she tried to end their relationship, her family has finally received the court ruling they had been waiting for.

On September 9, the Shaanxi Provincial High People’s Court rejected an appeal from the man convicted of killing her and upheld his death sentence.

The defendant, identified by his surname Shi, was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to death, with lifelong deprivation of political rights. For Dong Wenhui’s family, however, the ruling brought little sense of victory.

“It has been more than two years over 900 days and I really feel like I can’t hold on much longer,” Dong’s father told Red Star News.“I can’t see my daughter or speak to her even once, while the murderer is still alive.” He said he hoped the sentence would be carried out as soon as possible.

The case dates back to the evening of June 20, 2024, when Dong told Shi, her boyfriend, that she wanted to end their relationship while the two were inside a car.

According to the court proceedings, Shi refused to accept the breakup. He then took a double-edged knife that he had allegedly prepared in advance from beneath the driver’s floor mat and stabbed Dong in the neck. She died at the scene.

After the killing, Dong’s family discovered disturbing evidence on her phone. Several selfies appeared to document injuries she had suffered over time, including bruises across different parts of her body and burns on her chest that appeared to have been caused by cigarette butts. There was also a video showing her crying alone. Her diary described both psychological and physical suffering. She wrote about repeatedly experiencing emotional breakdowns and expressed a desire to distance herself from everything that was hurting her.

The case went to trial in November 2025. Shi admitted to the killing and said he had previously considered suicide but “couldn’t bring himself to do it.”

On February 10, 2026, the Xi’an Intermediate People’s Court convicted him of intentional homicide and sentenced him to death. Although the court noted that he had surrendered himself and that the killing arose from a relationship dispute, it found that Dong bore no responsibility for the conflict.

The court concluded that Shi had acted with a firm intention to kill, used particularly brutal methods and caused extremely serious consequences.

During the July 21 appeal hearing, he argued that his actions should be classified as intentional injury rather than intentional homicide. He also said he appealed because he wanted more time with his child and blamed Dong’s parents for opposing their relationship.

Dong’s father responded: “You want your child. Do you think I don’t want mine? What about my daughter who was killed?” Prosecutors recommended upholding the original death sentence.

On September 9, the appellate court rejected Shi’s appeal and confirmed the death sentence. Dong’s older sister said the family had endured sleepless nights, reviewed evidence repeatedly and struggled through more than two years of grief.

“On the surface, it may look like we won,” she said. “But in reality, our family will always be the losing side.” “My sister is gone. Even if Shi is executed, she will never come back. We will never see her again in this lifetime.”
