The man was identified in several local reports as Li Xingqiang, approximately 40 years old and reportedly from China’s Henan province. His body was discovered on the morning of September 5, 2026, inside Room 905 of Bengal Hotel and Hospitality Limited in Sector 3 of Uttara.
According to Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Khalid Mansur, three other Chinese nationals were staying in separate rooms at the same hotel. They reportedly went to Li’s room during the morning and found him lying motionless on the floor.
The group alerted hotel employees, who then contacted the police. Officers arrived at the property and recovered the body.
Arrival in Bangladesh
Police said Li had reportedly arrived in Bangladesh the previous night and checked into the hotel shortly afterward. Authorities were still working to establish the purpose of his visit and other circumstances surrounding his stay in Dhaka.
Investigators completed an initial examination of the scene before sending his body to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. An unnatural-death case was also filed in connection with the incident.
Police Suspect Excessive Alcohol Consumption
Initial information obtained by investigators suggested that Li may have consumed a large quantity of alcohol during the previous night.
Police therefore listed excessive alcohol consumption as a possible explanation for his death. However, authorities stressed that this was only a preliminary suspicion and that the official cause could not be established until the results of the autopsy and related investigation were available.
One report citing police and officials from Bangladesh’s Department of Narcotics Control said the hotel itself was not licensed to sell or serve alcohol. Officials also alleged that alcohol had sometimes been supplied to hotel guests from a nearby licensed establishment, an issue authorities said they would investigate separately.
Police indicated that appropriate action could be taken if investigators determine that alcohol was being supplied or consumed at the hotel in violation of local regulations.
Another Chinese National Also Died in Uttara
The case became more complicated because reports emerged of another Chinese national dying at a separate hotel in Uttara at around the same period.
According to later reports, another Chinese man became ill while staying at a different hotel and was taken to Evercare Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police and Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department were examining circumstances surrounding both incidents.
Authorities also reportedly contacted the Chinese Embassy as investigators worked to confirm identities and determine what had happened in the separate cases. A Chinese police official was also reported to have assisted Bangladeshi authorities in connection with the investigation.
Some Bangladeshi media reports contain conflicting information about the names, ages and hotels associated with the two deaths, apparently because the incidents occurred in the same part of Uttara within a very short period. The strongest consistent reporting concerning the Bengal Hotel case identifies the deceased as Li Xingqiang, around 40 years old, who was found on the floor of Room 905.
Investigation Continues
For now, there is no confirmed finding that alcohol caused Li’s death. Police have described excessive drinking only as a likely or possible cause based on their preliminary investigation.
The final determination will depend on forensic and post-mortem findings.
The case remains under investigation, including questions about Li’s activities after arriving in Bangladesh, how alcohol may have been obtained, and whether any hotel or other party violated local regulations.
As of the latest reports located following the September 5 incident, authorities were still awaiting the medical findings needed to establish the definitive cause of death.
