A 17-year-old girl was left trapped inside a locked vehicle for nearly two hours at a highway service area in central China after the driver of a privately arranged ride allegedly left the car and became unreachable.

The girl, from Guiyang, Guizhou Province, was reportedly traveling home when the vehicle stopped at Shaodong Service Area in Hunan Province for a break. What was supposed to be a brief stop quickly turned into a dangerous ordeal.

According to reports, the driver got out of the vehicle without informing the teenage passenger or checking whether she had left the vehicle. He then reportedly walked away and became unreachable. The phone number he had provided was already out of service, leaving the girl with no way to contact him.

As temperatures soared outside, the locked vehicle became increasingly hot. Trapped inside, the girl reportedly tried repeatedly to open the doors and knocked on the windows, but was unable to escape. As the heat and sense of confinement intensified, she eventually sent an emergency message to her family.

At around 10:13 a.m., her family contacted staff at the service area for help. Staff immediately rushed to the vehicle and tried to reassure the girl through the window while contacting highway police to identify the driver.

A search of the service area was launched. Just five minutes later, at approximately 10:18 a.m., staff reportedly located the driver resting inside the service area's driver lounge. At around 10:20 a.m., the vehicle was opened and the girl was finally able to escape. She was reportedly sweating heavily and appeared physically weak and highly distressed after being exposed to the heat for an extended period. Staff provided her with drinking water and psychological support while helping her recover from the ordeal.

Once her condition had stabilized, service-area staff helped coordinate her onward journey and maintained contact throughout the transfer to ensure she could safely return home. She was later reported to have arrived in Guiyang safely without further physical discomfort.

The incident also highlights the potentially serious risks of being trapped inside a vehicle during hot weather. A 2024 study published in Forensic Science International found that children inside closed vehicles can experience dangerous increases in body temperature within a relatively short period under hot conditions.

The researchers estimated that, at an outdoor temperature of 32.4°C, a child could enter an uncontrolled body-temperature rise after around 72 minutes, reach heatstroke conditions at approximately 129 minutes and approach a critical thermal threshold after about 151 minutes.

The nearly two-hour period in which the teenager was reportedly trapped therefore represents more than an uncomfortable delay. Under extreme heat, prolonged confinement inside a sealed vehicle can quickly become a serious health and safety emergency.

The case has also raised concerns over the risks of arranging long-distance rides privately and outside regulated platforms. According to the report, the girl had booked the ride through an offline private arrangement rather than a formal ride-hailing platform. This meant there was reportedly no platform-based emergency channel immediately available when the driver became unreachable.

Formal ride-hailing services generally provide mechanisms such as driver identity verification, trip records, route tracking and emergency assistance. These safeguards can make it easier to locate a vehicle or driver when an unexpected incident occurs.

For passengers, particularly minors traveling long distances, the incident serves as a warning to avoid informal ride arrangements whenever possible and to use regulated transportation services with clear passenger and driver records.

For drivers, the message is equally straightforward: before leaving a vehicle at a service area, always check the cabin and make sure every passenger has safely exited or is otherwise accounted for. In extreme heat, failing to make that simple check can put a passenger's safety at serious risk.
