Double Typhoon Alert: Strong Typhoon "Dolphin" Heads for Shanghai – Prepare for Wind and Rain

Shanghai is facing a one-two punch this week as two typhoons stir up the Pacific. The big one to watch? Typhoon "Dolphin" (Bái Hǎi Tún) – a strong typhoon expected to enter the East China Sea tomorrow (Friday) and bring days of wind and rain to the city.

What's happening right now?

As of 8 AM today, Typhoon Dolphin was located about 1,250 kilometers southeast of Shanghai's Nanhui Shoal. It's currently a strong typhoon with maximum sustained winds of up to 45–50 m/s, moving west-northwest at 15–20 km/h. It's expected to enter the East China Sea on Friday, August 7, and gradually approach the East China coast.

In addition, Typhoon "Chan-hom" is out in the Pacific but moving north quickly and will not affect China. Meanwhile, Typhoon "Kujira" has weakened into a tropical depression after hitting the Philippines.

What does this mean for Shanghai?

The city is already feeling the effects. A blue typhoon warning and an orange sea wave warning are currently in effect.

Here's what to expect:

Wind: Starting Friday, Shanghai will see persistent strong winds of 6–7 levels (around 50–60 km/h), with gusts possibly reaching 8–9 levels in coastal areas.
Rain: Scattered showers today, but the real rain arrives Sunday through Tuesday, with heavy downpours expected. Temperatures will drop to around 28°C by Tuesday.
Coastal impact: The East China Sea could see waves up to 6–10 meters. Coastal areas should stay alert.

When will it hit hardest?

The worst of the storm is expected from Sunday (August 9) through Tuesday (August 11). That's when Shanghai will experience its most significant wind and rain, so plan accordingly.

What about the rest of China?

The storm will also bring heavy rain to Jiangnan, Jianghan, Jianghuai, and Huanghuai regions from August 8–12. Later, parts of North China, Inner Mongolia, and Northeast China could see rain from the storm's remnants.
