According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the answer is surprisingly simple: water vapor.
The air was still heavy with moisture after the rain. That water vapor acted like a filter — scattering shorter wavelengths (blue and green light) and letting longer, warmer wavelengths (red and orange) pass through.
To put it more simply: with so much humidity in the air, it was almost as if we were standing inside a low-lying cloud — and the sunset was happening right at ground level.
