Reports allege that she was kidnapped shortly after arrival and that her family later paid a large ransom. Her social media accounts were reportedly taken over by the gang and used to spread false claims about gambling debts.
A major suspect, Liu Hanwen, was returned from the US to China in July 2026. Some reports claimed investigators then confirmed Athena had been killed and her body disposed of.
However, these claims remain disputed and have not been officially confirmed by the authorities handling her disappearance.
