Meanwhile, numerous posts have circulated online concerning the alleged disappearance and death of a Chinese influencer known as“Athena” (Athena Liya). According to media reports, in June 2023, “Athena” was allegedly lured to Manila, the Philippines, by her friend Li Yifei, also known as Li Yifei, under the pretext of taking a trip to relax and producing overseas content. After arriving in the Philippines, she was allegedly controlled by a transnational kidnapping group led by a man identified as Liu.

However, on August 11, Red Star News reported that Ningbo police had confirmed that neither the series of cases involving Liu nor the alleged kidnapping case involving influencer “Athena Liya” was handled by the Ningbo police.
As of now, no Chinese or Philippine police authority or government department has issued an official statement confirming the disappearance of “Athena Liya.”
The two incidents have also prompted renewed reminders for Chinese travelers to remain vigilant and prioritize personal safety when traveling overseas, particularly during the summer holiday season.
