Li Guoyou left Sichuan in 1987 in search of work and eventually moved to Harbin. In 2001, after the restaurant where he worked closed, his employer asked him to watch her mountain house, telling him he could leave whenever he wanted. Instead, Li stayed for 25 years, surviving by growing corn, raising livestock and fishing.
His identity card later expired, and without enough money to return to Sichuan and renew it, he became increasingly isolated. When the homeowner finally returned in 2026, she was shocked to discover he was still there.
With help from police and local officials, Li travelled more than 40 hours back to Sichuan, reunited with his brothers and received new identification documents.
After nearly three decades away, Li is finally home and plans to remain with his family.
