"The Moon Is Too Bright, I Can't Sleep" – China's 12345 Government Hotline Became a Wishing Well for Citizens

Recently, a story went viral in China: a citizen dialed the 12345 government hotline to file an official complaint about moonlight disrupting their sleep. Too bright. Can't rest. Needs government intervention.

The government helpline – known as 12345 – was designed for civic issues. But somewhere along the way, it turned into a wishing well for the wildly imaginative.

Here are some of the best (and most bizarre) ones that actually made it through.

"The moon is too bright"

A citizen called 12345 to complain that the moonlight was interfering with their sleep. They wanted the government to fix it.

The internet had a field day.

One commenter wrote: "If the moon is too bright, have you considered buying curtains?"

Another added: "This isn't 12345. This is a wishing well."

"Find me a spouse – or I'll burn my house down"

A drunk caller dialed 12345 and demanded that the government help them find a partner. When told that's not what the hotline is for, they threatened to set their house on fire. We're guessing the government didn't send a matchmaker.

"My child failed the exam. Can we redo it?"

When their child didn't score well on the national college entrance exam, one parent called the hotline to demand a do-over. For everyone. The government politely declined. The exam, sadly, doesn't offer a "try again" button.

"Frogs are too loud"

A village official in Xuzhou once received a complaint about frogs croaking in the rain. The caller wanted the government to do something about it. The official had to politely explain that frogs are a sign of a healthy ecosystem – and that there's no "frog volume control" button.

"Can you check my husband's salary?"

One caller asked 12345 to access their husband's payroll records from the finance department – including the exact timing of his salary payments. The request was declined. Privacy laws exist for a reason.

"My spouse cheated on me. Arrest them!"

A citizen called 12345 to demand that the government arrest their spouse's lover and force them to pay compensation for emotional distress. The hotline politely explained that this isn't a criminal matter – if they want justice, they'll need to take it to court.

"There are potatoes in my chicken. I'm calling the police."

A customer in Shanghai ordered dapanji ("big plate chicken"). When the dish arrived with potatoes in it, they called the police. Their reason? They felt cheated – the restaurant also sold a potato-chicken dish for 38 RMB, and this one cost 68 RMB. In their mind, that was fraud.

Police arrived and explained that dapanji has no official recipe – it varies by region and restaurant. The menu was clearly priced, so it wasn't fraud. The restaurant offered to comp the meal. The customer ate the whole thing.

The ironic twist? Xinjiang netizens later chimed in: "Real dapanji in Xinjiang always has potatoes. That's what makes the sauce thick enough for noodles."

While these stories are entertaining, they also highlight a growing problem: public service hotlines are being flooded with frivolous requests. Some of these calls could have been resolved with a quick search or common sense — but instead, they clog up a system designed for real emergencies.

Public services have limits. So do public complaints.
