A superstitious man in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province, ended up with a retinal detachment after repeatedly slapping his twitching right eyelid. He acted out of fear that the eye spasm signalled impending misfortune, falling for a widely circulated folk superstition.
The incident is rooted in a well-known old Chinese folk saying: “A twitch in the left eye foretells incoming wealth; a twitch in the right eye foreshadows disaster.”
The patient, surnamed Le, was plagued by persistent spasms in his right eyelid for multiple consecutive days. He tried basic soothing remedies including eye rest and warm compresses, yet the twitching would not subside.
Overwhelmed by anxiety about the supposed unlucky omen, Le refused to visit a hospital and instead searched online for folk cures. He came across unsubstantiated advice claiming hard slaps around the eye could beat away bad fortune. Another common folk remedy among elderly Chinese residents involves taping a small slip of white paper to the twitching eyelid to stop spasms.
As reported by local outletChangjiang Daily, Le slapped the skin surrounding his right eye nonstop over three days. Though the eyelid twitch finally faded, a far worse eye injury developed shortly after. His field of vision drastically narrowed; he lost all peripheral sight on both sides and could only see objects directly in front of him.
Le rushed to receive medical treatment and was formally diagnosed with retinal detachment. Following corrective surgery, doctors successfully restored his eyesight.
Medical professionals explained the severe risk behind his reckless behaviour. The human retina measures merely under 0.3 millimetres thick on average. Violent slaps deliver sharp impact force straight through the eyeball, greatly raising the chance of retinal tears and detachment.
The bizarre case quickly went viral across Chinese social media, sparking countless humorous and cautionary comments from netizens. One user joked, “He actually made the old saying of a twitching right eye bringing disaster come true.”
Another netizen reminded the public, “Eyelid twitching is just the body sending out a physical warning signal, not a prediction of misfortune. Trust science, not superstition.” Le has not issued any public remarks regarding his experience.
