Did it just "snow" in Shanghai — in July? The city's weather has gone into overdrive.
Shanghai just issued four weather warnings between 1:27 PM and 2:13 PM today:
Hail warning (yellow) – issued at 2:13 PM, affecting Changning and Putuo districts, valid for the next 6 hours
Thunderstorm warning (yellow) – issued at 1:27 PM, active until midnight
Strong wind warning (blue) – issued at 1:30 PM, with gusts up to Force 7–9
Heat warning (orange) – carried over from earlier, with temperatures still at 35–38°C across most areas
In total, 24 weather warnings are currently active across the city.
Hail expected this afternoon
According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, strong convective cells are developing rapidly over Putuo, Changning, southern Jiading, and Pudong's Xuanqiao area. Hail is possible – especially in Changning, Putuo, and surrounding areas where the strongest activity is forming.

Yesterday, some Shanghai residents looked out their windows and did a double‑take: was that…… snow?
In the middle of a 37°C summer afternoon, people in Xuhui West Bund and Pudong Houtan captured what looked like sleet falling from the sky. Videos spread quickly online, with many asking: did it just snow in July?
The answer, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau: no, it wasn't snow. It was ice.
Chief forecaster Zhu Jiarong explained that strong convection caused storm clouds to rise high enough for mid-level temperatures to drop significantly, producing ice pellets and graupel (soft hail) that came down with the rain. The icy showers started around 1 PM on Thursday, developing over Pudong and moving into the city center.
That same unstable atmosphere is what's fueling today's warnings – only this time, it‘s stronger and more organized.
The warnings are in effect until midnight. Stay safe and keep an eye on the sky.
