Bought a vintage ethnic jacket, old embroidered textile, or silver ornament in China? Before packing it into your suitcase, make sure it is not considered a cultural relic.

A foreign traveler was recently stopped by customs officers at Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport after several items in the luggage were suspected to be cultural relics.

During the inspection, officers found 56 ethnic costumes and six suspected silver ornaments. After expert identification by the Guizhou Provincial Museum, eight items — including traditional Miao ethnic garments and embroidered textile pieces — were confirmed to be general cultural relics.

This does not mean all ethnic clothing or handmade souvenirs are banned from export. The key issue is whether the item is old, collectible, or identified as a cultural relic.

China Customs reminds travelers that cultural relics cannot be taken out of China freely. Items considered cultural relics must go through an official review process. If approved, travelers need to obtain a cultural relic export permit and declare the items to customs before taking them out of the country.

Travelers should be especially careful with old ethnic clothing, embroidered textile pieces, old silver ornaments, calligraphy and paintings, coins, porcelain, antiques, or vintage collectibles.

When in doubt, check before you fly. A quick confirmation may save you trouble at the airport. China Customs also reminds travelers that smuggling cultural relics can result in criminal liability. Even if the case does not rise to the level of a crime, travelers may still face customs penalties under relevant laws and regulations.
