Samsung Electronics Ends 34-Year Home Appliance Journey in Mainland of China

The long-standing rumors have finally become reality today. On May 6, 2026, Samsung Electronics officially pulled the plug on its home appliance business in mainland of China. This marks the end of a massive 34-year journey that originally began when the tech giant first entered the Chinese market back in 1992.

The announcement was made on Samsung’s official website, stating that the company needs to handle a "rapidly changing market environment." After a careful study, they decided that stopping sales of televisions, monitors, and all other household appliances was the best path forward. This wasn't just a small cut; it is a total exit for their appliance wing.

If you are wondering about the specifics, the list is quite thorough. We aren't just talking about screens. The exit includes refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and even niche items like air purifiers and projectors.

The good news for many of us is that Samsung’s smartphone business is staying put. They confirmed that mobile sales will continue as normal. For those who already own Samsung appliances, the company promised to follow the national "Three Guarantees" laws. This means you will still receive standardized after-sales service and support for the gear you currently have.

Looking back, the signs of this exit were hard to miss if you followed the big tech shows this year. At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Samsung famously moved its display out of the central hall, allowing competitors like TCL to take the spotlight. By the time the AWE show rolled around in China this March, the global giant was a total no-show.

While the appliance division was fading out, the company’s stock was doing the opposite. On the very day of this announcement, Samsung’s market value surpassed the one-trillion-dollar mark. This massive growth is being driven by a "super cycle" in AI chips and storage, which have now become the company's core profit engines.

For those of us living in China with a Samsung fridge or TV, the most immediate concern is after-sales support. It's no secret that Samsung’s service network has already been shrinking lately, with fewer repair centers available in non-core cities. With the business fully exiting, the maintenance of millions of existing units becomes a very real question.

From a broader market perspective, though, you likely won't feel a massive void when shopping. The Chinese home appliance market is highly mature, and brands like Hisense, TCL, Xiaomi, and AOC already offer everything from entry-level to flagship gear. Even the specialized niches where Samsung was a leader—like high-end gaming monitors or professional design screens—are being quickly filled by brands like Asus, Dell, and various local players. While it’s the end of an era for Samsung appliances in China, the market is moving forward without skipping a beat.
