A fatal fall at a hotel in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district on the morning of May 4 has left one person dead and seven others injured, prompting an ongoing police investigation.

Shortly before 9:00 a.m., police received a report from staff at a hotel at 246 Queen’s Road East, initially stating that a man and a woman had fallen from height. However, upon arrival, officers determined that a single woman had fallen from an upper level of the building and struck another woman in the hotel lobby.

The 69-year-old victim, a hotel guest holding a U.S. passport, was found lying unconscious in the lobby and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman she struck — a 74-year-old local resident surnamed Lam — sustained multiple injuries and fell into a coma. She had been in the lobby checking out at the time of the incident and was transported by ambulance to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment.

Police cordoned off the area for investigation and confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene. Preliminary findings suggest the deceased fell from the hotel rooftop, during which she shattered a glass canopy inside the building before landing in the lobby and injuring the bystander.

At the time of the incident, six other hotel guests in the lobby were also injured by falling glass fragments. They included Lam’s 77-year-old sister, an 89-year-old American friend of the two women, and two mainland Chinese mothers with their children aged 40 and 10, and 41 and 8, respectively. All six sustained cuts to their limbs or heads and were taken to Ruttonjee Hospital for treatment.

Police said investigations into the circumstances of the fall are ongoing, and the exact cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination. It is understood that the deceased had a history of emotional illness and had been visiting Hong Kong as a tourist with her husband, who was reportedly out seeking medical attention at the time of the incident.
