We have all felt that sinking feeling of arriving at the airport a few minutes too late, only to find the check-in counter already closed. Well, while most people simply accept the delay and book the next available flight, a man surnamed Wang decided to handle his frustration in a way that eventually landed him behind bars.

The story, which was highlighted by the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate on April 8 as a typical case of punishing the fabrication of false terrorist information, began at Qingdao Liuting International Airport.

Wang had arrived late and was told he could no longer check in for his flight. Instead of looking for a solution, he decided to vent his anger by threatening the staff. He told the check-in personnel that he would call the police to report a bomb on the plane—hoping that by preventing the flight from taking off, he might somehow force them to let him on board.

When his blackmail didn't work, Wang actually went through with it. He made a report claiming there were bombs both on the flight and within the airport terminal. As you can imagine, the authorities took the threat very seriously. The airline was forced to trigger emergency protocols, which included a full clearing of the aircraft cabin. The disruption didn't stop with his flight either, as the emergency measures caused a chain reaction that led to five different flights being delayed.

As it turns out, the legal system does not take kindly to using "bomb threats" as a customer service tactic. The court found that Wang’s actions constituted the crime of fabricating false terrorist information. For the sake of venting his personal spite and causing significant disruption to civil aviation safety, Wang was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
