China’s disease control authorities have reported a rise in influenza and rhinovirus activity since April, as the country prepares for increased travel and public gatherings during the upcoming May Day holiday.

According to China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration, respiratory infections have shown some fluctuations since the beginning of April. Officials warned that the holiday travel rush could increase the risk of spreading respiratory illnesses, as well as mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya.

Health authorities also advised the public to remain alert to other seasonal infections, including norovirus and hand, foot and mouth disease. People were reminded to maintain good hygiene while traveling, take precautions against mosquitoes and ticks, avoid close contact with wild animals, and monitor the health of children and elderly family members.

Medical experts said the current situation is not a major cause for panic. No new pathogens have been detected, and infection levels remain much lower than the peak seen last December. However, vulnerable groups, including elderly people and unvaccinated children, are advised to take extra precautions in crowded places.

Officials also highlighted the importance of vaccination, noting that April 25 marks China’s 40th National Children’s Vaccination Day. China said it has maintained vaccination coverage of over 90 percent among eligible children in recent years, helping reduce diseases such as measles, rubella, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis A, and others to historically low levels.

In 2025, China added the HPV vaccine to its national immunization program, with free vaccination services expanded for eligible girls in 2026.
