On March 12, a post on WeChat announced several small but practical updates to the app's voice and video calling features in its latest version. The changes focus on improving call handling, cross-language communication, and preventing accidental interruptions during video chats.

  • "Invisible" Call Pop-Up

One new feature allows users to discreetly ignore incoming calls. When an unexpected WeChat voice or video call arrives, users can now tap an "Ignore" option on the pop-up window.

After selecting "Ignore," the call notification disappears from the screen, while the caller does not receive a "declined" message. The feature effectively lets users bypass a call without explicitly rejecting it.

  • Voice Messages Gain Real-Time Translation

WeChat has also added a translation capability to its voice-to-text feature, aimed at facilitating cross-border communication.

After sending a voice message in a chat, users can tap the "Translate" button in the lower-left corner. The app will automatically translate the voice content into a foreign language. In practice, this means a voice message spoken in one language can be converted and displayed as text in another.

According to the update, WeChat currently supports translation in 18 languages, including Chinese. The feature is being gradually rolled out to users.

  • Screen Lock for Video Calls

Another update addresses a common problem during video chats—accidentally ending a call due to unintended screen touches.

Users can now tap a lock icon in the upper-right corner during a WeChat video call to lock the screen. This prevents accidental taps from hanging up the call while the conversation is ongoing. Like the translation feature, the screen-lock function is also being released gradually.

The updates reflect WeChat's continued efforts to refine everyday communication tools through incremental improvements rather than major interface changes.
