On March 4, the MUJI Huaihai 755 store put up signs reading "Goodbye, See You Again in...", signaling the end of its 10-year run at this iconic location. The store is scheduled to close its doors permanently at the end of March.
What to Expect During the Final Weeks
For those looking to stop by before it closes, the store is currently holding a closing sale on select items, which will run until March 31. Despite the looming closure, the popular third-floor restaurant remains busy with regular diners, and the store continues to welcome nostalgic customers who remember its grand opening a decade ago.
Not a Departure, but a Relocation
MUJI fans don't need to worry about the brand leaving Shanghai. According to MUJI's Brand Communications Department, this closure is a standard "store adjustment" rather than a withdrawal from the market.
A brand-new Urban Flagship store is scheduled to open in late April at Xin Liu Bai (新六百) in Xujiahui.
MUJI plans to continue its "large store strategy" in Mainland, with a goal of opening approximately 40 new stores annually. By the end of August 2026, the brand expects to have opened three more Urban Flagships across the country.
When the Huaihai 755 flagship first opened in December 2015, it was the largest MUJI in China and a massive cultural event for Shanghai.
On its first day, people queued for up to 80 minutes in lines that stretched 100 meters, with roughly 7,000 customers visiting in a single day.
The store introduced several concepts to China for the first time, including MUJI BOOKS, the AROMA Labo, and the world's first MUJI Diner in 2017.
The decision to open larger, newer flagships is backed by strong financial performance. According to recent fiscal reports, Mainland remains a core engine for MUJI's global growth, with revenue in the region increasing by over 18% and profits jumping nearly 28% in the most recent quarter.
