The reality of living abroad often means being thousands of miles away when crisis hits home. For Saeed, a 33-year-old Muay Thai coach in Hunan, that distance became unbearable this month after news reached him of bombings near his family's house in Tehran.

Saeed had built a quiet, successful life in Xiangxi, Hunan, working as a freestyle combat coach at Yingbo Fighting. He moved to China in 2024 at the invitation of the gym's owner, Huang Chaoxin, who had been impressed by Saeed's skills when they first met in Thailand years ago.

A Community Favorite

In Xiangxi, Saeed was known for his frugality and dedication. He lived in the gym's dorms and kept his personal spending to just 300 or 400 RMB a month, sending nearly his entire paycheck back to his family in Iran. He was particularly popular with the gym's younger students and their parents, who valued his disciplined approach to training.

The Decision to Leave

The situation changed on February 28 following reports of military strikes in Iran. When Saeed learned that the area near his family home had been targeted, he immediately approached his boss to resign.

Despite having a stable income and a secure life in China, Saeed felt he had no choice but to go back. As he told his employer: "Even if I die, I would rather die with my family."

Saying Goodbye

Huang Chaoxin, moved by Saeed's situation and his courage, helped him settle his affairs and purchased his return flight ticket.

While Saeed expressed deep sadness at leaving his students and the community that welcomed him, he left with a small hope: if the conflict ends and his family is safe, he plans to return to China and pick up his coaching whistle once again.
