Hunan man finds 10 grams of gold in duck, worth US$1,800

A villager in Longhui County, Hunan, found 10 grams of gold particles inside a duck's stomach, valued at 12,000 yuan (US$1,800). The discovery is linked to the area's historic gold mining near the Chenshui River. Gold is indigestible and passes through animals. Ownership may require state confirmation.

A man in central China made an unusual discovery when he found real gold inside a duck he was preparing for food. The strange find quickly went viral on social media and surprised many people.

The incident happened in February in Longhui County, Hunan Province. A villager surnamed Liu was slaughtering a duck when he noticed small shiny particles inside the bird's stomach. After examining them, he suspected they might be gold.

To check if the particles were real, Liu performed a simple burning test. The results suggested that the particles were genuine gold. When weighed, the total amount came to about 10 grams, which is worth around 12,000 yuan (about US$1,800)

Liu believes the duck swallowed the gold while looking for food. The ducks in the village are raised free-range near the Chenshui River, an area that was once known for gold mining. Because of this history, small gold particles can still be found in the soil and river mud. The duck likely swallowed mud containing tiny gold pieces while feeding.

Experts say that gold cannot be digested by animals or humans. Usually, it simply passes through the digestive system without causing harm. However, larger pieces could sometimes cause blockages or other health problems.

Local officials said the discovery is possible because the region once had rich gold deposits. In fact, villagers reportedly found more than 10 grams of gold in the same river while washing sand last year.

Interestingly, similar stories exist in Chinese history. During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), some farmers reportedly collected gold particles from the droppings of ducks and geese that had swallowed gold-rich soil.

Liu said other villagers had found small amounts of gold in ducks before, but none had discovered as much as he did. His father even described the discovery as a sign of good luck for the year ahead.

The story quickly spread online and attracted millions of views. Many social media users joked about raising ducks near the river in hopes of finding gold themselves.

However, authorities say further professional testing would be needed to fully confirm the gold and determine who legally owns it, because mineral resources in China belong to the state.
