A man in Hubei province, China, was fined after authorities discovered he used a VPN to reach international social media platforms from his home.

According to local police, the man, surnamed Xu, used a smartphone app to bypass China's internet restrictions. 

On March 8, 2026, he accessed platforms such as TikTok and X without official approval.

Police said their investigation included Xu's own statement and evidence from his device. 

They determined that his actions violated China's rules on unauthorised cross-border internet access.

On March 11, Xu was issued a warning and fined 200 yuan (around $28). 

He was also ordered to stop using the VPN immediately and pay the fine within 15 days. 

Authorities noted that he can challenge the decision by requesting an administrative review within 60 days or filing a lawsuit within six months.
