The traveler had stowed a handbag in the overhead compartment above his seat but later returned to find the cash and other personal items he put in it were gone. The traveler at once approached the authorities upon landing at Hong Kong International Airport.

An investigation into the matter was also initiated by officers from the Airport District who attended the case. A preliminary probe by a Hong Kong Police Force duty press officer resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old man from mainland. He is alleged to have taken some 500 HKD in foreign currency and an Octopus card, among other things, from the victim's bag.

The suspect is currently in custody for further interrogation as the case is transferred to Airport District Criminal Investigation Team 6 to process it further.

Following this apprehension, HKPF posted a few crucial reminders to international travelers on how to safeguard their belongings in mid-flight. They warn travelers to be on alert on the plane and recommend that carry-on luggage be locked, if possible. When you get up from your seat, it's safest to keep your cash and valuables with you or hand them to a travel companion you trust.

Travellers are advised to carry out a comprehensive final check of their seat row and overhead bins to ensure nothing has been tampered with or left behind. The authorities also reminded that "stealing" is a grave offence in Hong Kong and those convicted may be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years' imprisonment.
