China-North Korea Train Service Returns: New Passenger Routes Start March 12

For many in China, a trip to North Korea is a bucket-list journey that offers a unique glimpse into one of the world's most secluded nations. Starting March 12, 2026, this trip becomes much more accessible as international passenger train services officially resume between China and Pyongyang.

If you are planning a visit, here is the essential information on schedules, routes, and how to secure your tickets, as the process remains strictly offline.


Route and Schedule Details


There are two primary ways to make the journey: the long-haul route from Beijing or the shorter cross-border hop from Dandong.


1. The Beijing – Pyongyang Route


Frequency: Runs four times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays).


Departure: The train (K27) leaves Beijing Station at 17:26 and arrives in Pyongyang at 18:07 (local time) the following day.


Return: Departure from Pyongyang is at 10:26 (local time), arriving back at Beijing Station at 08:40 the next morning.


Stops: Passengers can board or disembark at Beijing, Tianjin, Shanhaiguan, Shenyang, and Dandong.


2. The Dandong – Pyongyang Route


Frequency: Daily service.


Departure: Leaves Dandong at 10:00, arriving in Pyongyang at 18:07 (local time).


Return: Leaves Pyongyang at 10:26 (local time), arriving in Dandong at 16:23.


Note: Immigration and customs formalities will be conducted at the Dandong (China) and Sinuiju (North Korea) border checkpoints.


How to Buy Tickets (Offline Only)


Unlike standard domestic travel in China, you cannot book these tickets via 12306 or Trip.com. Tickets must be purchased in person at designated international counters.


For the Beijing Route: Tickets are available at international rail outlets in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanhaiguan, Shenyang, and Dandong. Travellers can consult:

For the Dandong Route: Tickets can be purchased at the Shentie Wenlyu International Ticket Hall. (沈铁文旅国际联运票售票厅)

Returning from Pyongyang: Tickets for the return leg to China must be purchased at the Pyongyang Station ticket office. (朝鲜平壤站售票处)
