According to the Hong Kong Police Force, the suspects include two foreign women aged 23 and 60, a 66-year-old mainland man surnamed Liao, and a 77-year-old local man surnamed Cheng. All four were arrested on suspicion of "using false instruments" and are currently in custody under investigation. The case is being handled by the Western District Crime Squad, Team 1.
Police received the report at 3:42 p.m. from a bank located at 8 Belcher's Street. Bank staff grew suspicious of the check's authenticity and called authorities after the group requested the astronomical withdrawal during the account setup process.
This incident follows a similar case earlier in the month. On January 8, a woman allegedly presented a suspicious remittance slip and attempted to withdraw €16 billion (roughly HK$135 billion) from a bank in Admiralty. She was arrested on the spot.
The Hong Kong Police later identified the suspect in that case as a 65-year-old mainland woman surnamed Zhou, who had entered the city using a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents. She also faces charges of using false instruments, with the case being followed up by the Central District Crime Squad, Team 5.
