When Mei, a woman from abroad, invested over a million yuan in a property in China, she thought it was a step towards a shared future with her Chinese boyfriend, Ming.  Little did she know, her trust would be shattered and her savings taken without her knowledge.

Recently, a court in Sichuan Province handled a cross-border mediation case related to this situation.

  • The Dispute: A Million-Yuan Property Sparks Turmoil

Mei (a pseudonym), a woman from Myanmar, met and fell in love with Ming (a pseudonym), a native of Xuanhan County, Sichuan, while conducting business in Yunnan in 2021. The couple began living together.

In 2023, Mei invested over one million yuan of her personal savings to purchase a property in a Yunnan county under Ming's name. The funds were transferred from her account to his and then used to pay for the house. However, in 2024, Ming sold the property without informing Mei and took all the proceeds.

What began as a romantic relationship escalated into a legal dispute. After repeated attempts at communication failed, Mei had no choice but to file a lawsuit. Following Ming's objection on jurisdiction grounds, the case was eventually transferred to the Xuanhan County Court in accordance with the law.

  • Mediation: Bridging Legal and Cultural Gaps

Faced with a case entangled in cross-border factors and personal relationships, the presiding judge patiently listened to both parties' demands. He took special care to explain Chinese laws and litigation procedures to Mei, who had traveled from afar, using sincerity to bridge cultural and legal gaps.

Rather than rushing to a judgment, the judge repeatedly guided both sides after court sessions: "Is there a way to allow each of you to start a new life with more peace of mind?" Through this communication bridge, the tensions between the two gradually eased.

After several rounds of empathetic negotiation, the parties reached an agreement: Ming would pay Mei more than 539,000 yuan from the house sale and voluntarily transfer ownership of his vehicle to her.

  • Case Closure: Ensuring Agreement Enforcement

Reaching a settlement was only part of the solution. To ensure the mediation agreement would be fully executed and to prevent potential complications in enforcement, the court, in line with the Supreme People's Court's "Guidelines on Strengthening Coordination Between Litigation, Review, and Enforcement to Resolve Disputes Before Execution," conducted a thorough review.

With both parties' consent, the court directly deducted the funds from Ming's frozen account, ensuring that Mei received the full amount of over 539,000 yuan immediately.
