On December 5, multiple bloggers on Weibo claimed that the Liaoning Men's Volleyball Team had defaulted on salary payments to two Russian players and had been sanctioned by the FIVB with a transfer ban. The Liaoning Volleyball Club has since issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
Liaoning Volleyball Club Issues Statement on Reports of Salary Arrears and FIVB Transfer Ban
Several posts circulated on Weibo on December 5 alleging that the Liaoning Men's Volleyball Team owed wages to Russian foreign players and had consequently been prohibited from registering new players by the FIVB. In response, the Liaoning Volleyball Club released a formal explanation rejecting key aspects of the claims.
According to the club, during the 2023–2024 China Men's Volleyball Super League season, foreign players Boris Busa and Ivan Zvicer left the team and returned to their home countries without permission. The club states that their unauthorized departure resulted in the players contracting an illness that prevented their participation upon re-entering China, compromising team performance and causing several core players to fall ill.
Following negotiations, both players agreed to terminate their contracts early and return home. They did not participate in the remaining matches, and the team finished the season with a B-level ranking. The club enforced wage deductions in accordance with contractual terms, which it says were acknowledged and accepted by the two foreign players.
The club further claims that after leaving China, the players failed to submit required documentation or statements to the Chinese Volleyball Association. Instead, they filed a complaint directly with the FIVB, accusing Liaoning of unpaid wages. The FIVB, according to the club, sent relevant communication to an individual staff member rather than the club's official address, resulting in the club being unaware of the proceedings before a ruling was issued against them.
Liaoning Volleyball Club confirms that litigation between the club and the two players is still ongoing. It also states that during the 2024–2025 season, restrictions stemming from the dispute forced the club to compensate players with whom cooperation ultimately could not be finalized.
The club emphasizes that there are currently no salary arrears involving any contracted players or domestic and international partners, and that it is actively addressing legacy issues left by previous management. The statement warns that the club will pursue legal action against any organization or individual spreading false information that harms the team's reputation.
Statement issued December 5, 2025.
