A primary school in Hangzhou, eastern China, has come under fire after a video showed pupils standing at the school gate each morning to salute teachers' arriving cars—a practice that has ignited a fierce online debate over "formalism" in education.
In the clip, four students wearing patrol armbands can be seen standing at attention. As teachers' cars enter the campus, the children snap off salutes and shout "good morning," sometimes to vehicles with windows rolled up. Within one minute, they greeted 10 cars.
While the school defended the act as voluntary "etiquette education," many parents and online critics slammed it as performative and pointless.
"It's a struggle just to stand in the cold and salute the cars. It would be better to let the kids sleep an extra ten minutes," one parent said. Another questioned the safety of having children near busy morning traffic.
The criticism grew so intense that the local education bureau issued a formal reprimand, ordering the school to make changes. In response, the school said it would install speed bumps and review its etiquette programs.
This is not the first time a Chinese school has faced backlash over unconventional rituals. Just last month, a secondary school in Henan province drew criticism for a "guilt exercise" in which parents knelt to form a bridge for students to walk over—another case where traditional values clashed with modern public opinion.
