A viral social media post has exposed a brutal grey market in China's pet industry: the large-scale, illegal blood extraction from stray cats to supply pet hospitals, leading to public outrage and an official investigation.

The scandal came to light on October 24 when a blogger from Guangzhou shared a tragic story. After her cat fell ill and required a blood transfusion, her pet hospital recommended a "blood bank." She paid 800 yuan for a bag of blood, assuming the process was as regulated and safe as it is for humans.

While the cat initially regained consciousness after the transfusion, its condition rapidly deteriorated hours later, developing a high fever. Despite emergency treatment, the pet died. The attending veterinarian concluded that a severe bacterial infection, likely from contaminated donor blood, was the cause.

The heartbroken owner later discovered the dark truth from an industry insider. The blood was part of a well-established grey market chain.

  • Stray cats are acquired for just a few dozen yuan each.

  • Unscrupulous operators then drain them of three to four bags of blood per animal.

  • With each bag selling for 800 yuan, a single cat can generate a profit of at least 2,400 yuan.

In a now-viral video, the blogger exposed the extreme cruelty of the process, alleging that to extract the maximum amount of blood, workers hang the cats upside down to drain "every last drop."

This illegal operation stands in stark contrast to safe, legal blood donation practices for pets. Legally, donor cats must undergo hours of health checks, and the amount drawn is strictly limited by their weight. They are monitored for hours after the procedure to ensure a full recovery from sedation.

The case also highlights the medical risks. Cats have specific blood types (A, B, and AB), and incompatible or contaminated blood can trigger fatal reactions, as it likely did in this instance.

The story has sparked widespread condemnation online, with many netizens calling for a crackdown on this cruel and dangerous practice.

On October 28, the local Forestry and Landscaping Bureau responded, announcing that an investigation into the matter is now underway.

This tragic case has ripped the veil off a hidden corner of the pet care industry, raising urgent questions about regulation, ethics, and the welfare of animals caught in a brutal profit chain.
