On November 1, the Maldives Ministry of Health officially enforced a landmark "Generational Smoking Ban," prohibiting anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from purchasing or using tobacco products. This bold public health initiative applies to both citizens and foreign tourists.

The Ministry stated that President Mohamed Muizzu proposed the regulation earlier this year to "protect public health and nurture a tobacco-free generation." Under the new law, retailers must verify the birthdate of customers before selling tobacco. Violators who sell tobacco to restricted age groups face fines of up to 50,000 Maldivian Rufiyaa (approximately USD 3,200).

In parallel, the country is maintaining its strict stance on e-cigarettes. All individuals, regardless of age or nationality, are banned from importing, selling, possessing, or using any form of electronic cigarette. Offenders face a penalty of 5,000 Rufiyaa (about USD 320).

This dual-layered policy reflects the Maldives' unwavering commitment to tobacco control. The "Generational Smoking Ban" means the legal age to purchase tobacco will rise each year—by 2050, even those aged 43 will be prohibited from legally buying cigarettes. Including tourists in the ban signals a determined step toward reducing the smoking population and ultimately achieving a smoke-free society.
