On the evening of October 1, the Minhang Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau issued a notice following an incident at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, where a female spectator was forcibly removed from the stands after disrupting a match.
According to the police statement, at around 4 p.m. on October 1, a 46-year-old woman surnamed Xie was found to be heavily intoxicated while watching a match at the Qizhong Tennis Center. She repeatedly shouted loudly, seriously disturbing order at the venue and causing play to be suspended. After repeated warnings failed, officers escorted her from the scene and imposed an administrative penalty in accordance with the law. Police further reminded spectators to maintain discipline and watch matches in a civilized manner, warning that disruptive behavior would be dealt with strictly.
The incident occurred during a first-round men's singles match between Italy's Matteo Berrettini and France's Adrian Mannarino at the center court of the Qizhong Tennis Center. Witnesses reported that the woman, wearing a tank top, screamed abruptly several times and shouted in English throughout the match. She also made provocative gestures toward security personnel from the stands and displayed a foreign passport.
After the chair umpire determined that play could not continue under such disruption, the match was suspended, and the woman was instructed to leave. Instead of complying, she became increasingly agitated, shouting more loudly. Security staff approached her in an attempt to intervene, while even a young foreign boy accompanying her tried to dissuade her, but to no avail. Ultimately, several security personnel carried her out of the stands, with the boy also being escorted away. The removal was met with applause from the audience, and the match soon resumed.
Just a week earlier, the tournament's official social media channels had reminded fans of proper etiquette: maintaining silence, avoiding unnecessary movement, and cheering respectfully. From Wimbledon's century-old all-white dress code to the tradition of players acknowledging referees and opponents, tennis is widely regarded as a sport defined by elegance and respect, with spectator etiquette forming an essential part of its culture.
In this context, Xie's repeated shouting and disruptive behavior not only interrupted the flow of play but also infringed upon the rights of thousands of spectators and athletes present. Her actions were not a mere breach of courtesy but a clear violation of the basic standards of public order at sporting events. The principle of civilized spectating, officials stressed, is a bottom line that cannot be crossed.
