A Chinese woman recently shared her experience on a train from Guangxi to Shanghai. She stepped away briefly to use the restroom—and returned to find her assigned sleeper berth taken by a foreign passenger. Due to limited English and a wish to avoid conflict, she chose not to wake him and gave up her bed.
Online reactions were mixed. While some sympathized, others criticized that she should have stood her ground. "I just wanted to share a small frustration, didn't expect it to blow up," the woman later commented.
She clarified in a follow-up post:
"The whole thing happened in the morning. My friend went to the restroom, and when she came back, the berth was already taken. I just thought it was funny and decided to record it. Honestly, even if it had been a Chinese person, we probably wouldn't have done much either, because we were getting off at noon anyway. The fact that it was a foreigner just made it a bit more amusing to document.
My English isn't good, so I didn't know how to communicate. He was sleeping deeply, and I didn't want to wake him. I figured I'd just sit for a bit until we got off the train.
What really surprised me was the backlash. Some people in the comments attacked me personally, turning it into a debate about nationality and gender. That's too much. It was just a light complaint, but people even went to my other videos to insult me.
Everyone has different personalities. I'm the type who believes in avoiding unnecessary conflict. Even if it were an older Chinese lady, I might still have just complained a bit without confronting her, especially since I was getting off soon. Add to that the language barrier—I had no idea how to deal with a foreigner in that moment. So I let it go."
China's official train ticketing service, 12306, responded to the situation: If your seat or bed is occupied, you can always call the train attendant or onboard police. They'll check the ticket info and help you reclaim your space.
