In a groundbreaking move for China's aviation industry, Spring Airlines has launched a special recruitment program specifically for married women with children, extending the maximum age for applicants to 40. These flight attendants have been affectionately termed kongsao, or "air aunties."

The low-cost carrier emphasized that these experienced attendants bring natural warmth and approachability to the cabin environment. According to a press release, their life experiences enable them to handle emergencies with greater composure, anticipate passenger needs more effectively, and provide exceptional care to children onboard.

The initiative comes as the aviation industry experiences rapid recovery and seeks to diversify employment opportunities. The airline plans to recruit between 30 to 60 candidates through this program.

This marks a significant departure from traditional industry standards where airlines typically recruited attendants between 18-25 years old, with some carriers extending the limit to 28 or 32. Spring Airlines currently employs approximately 3,400 cabin crew members with an average age of 28, about 70% of whom are under 30.

The announcement has sparked widespread discussion on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with the topic garnering over 64 million views.

Many netizens have welcomed the move. "Rather than clinging to the 'youth filter,' the company recognizes the warmth and composure that married women with children can bring to the job, giving working mothers a renewed chance at their careers," commented one Weibo user.

Others pointed to practical considerations behind the decision. As one observer noted, the new recruitment strategy aligns with the airline's newly opened routes to destinations like Chiang Mai and Hanoi from Lanzhou, which typically attract more senior and family travelers. Flight attendants with parenting experience are seen as better equipped to serve these passenger groups - whether calming crying children or assisting elderly passengers with in-flight equipment.

The initiative represents a significant step toward more inclusive employment practices in China's aviation sector, recognizing the unique value that experienced mothers bring to customer service roles.
