A video circulating on social media has drawn wide attention after it showed a woman causing a disturbance in a sushi restaurant in Shanghai, including verbally abusing foreign customers.
Incident Details
According to witnesses, on September 5, a 33-year-old woman surnamed Wang was dining at a sushi restaurant in a shopping mall in Putuo District when she complained that the sushi was "poorly made." She then smashed dishes and shouted at staff members. When a foreign customer at a nearby table attempted to calm her down, Wang hurled insults at him, shouting: "You are trash, why did you come to China?" and allegedly tried to grab him.
Another Chinese diner who criticized Wang for assaulting the foreign guest was reportedly slapped in the face and had his table overturned. Police officers arrived promptly and restrained Wang. No serious injuries were reported at the scene.
Police Statement and Follow-Up
On September 7, the Putuo Branch of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau issued an official statement on its Weibo account.
According to the notice, at approximately 9:30 p.m. on September 5, police received a report about a disturbance in a restaurant on Tongchuan Road. Investigations revealed that Wang, who suffers from a mental illness, had traveled to Shanghai with her family for medical treatment and experienced an acute episode during the meal. She smashed tableware and assaulted fellow diners before being subdued by police officers.
Wang has since been sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment. Her family has apologized to the restaurant and affected customers, offering compensation and receiving their understanding.
