Think Twice Before Wearing Bright Colors Outdoors, Reason Behind...

On September 4, Wuhan Hankou Hospital reported two recent cases of life-threatening wasp stings. One of the victims, an 18-year-old named Xiaowei, suffered a severe allergic reaction after being stung during a mountain hike, resulting in anaphylactic shock.

Fortunately, thanks to prompt emergency care, he survived—but his story is a stark reminder of the risks posed by wasp encounters, especially during the peak activity months from August to November.

According to Dr. Huang Peng, Head of Emergency at Hankou Hospital, Xiaowei was hiking through a densely wooded area when several wasps suddenly attacked him. Moments later, he collapsed with intense pain, full-body rashes, difficulty breathing, and convulsions. His friends immediately called 120. Upon arrival, emergency responders administered adrenaline and stabilized his condition with fluids and electrolytes. Due to acute kidney damage from the venom, he was transferred to the ICU for further treatment.

"Wasp venom is extremely potent—its spread can be even faster than snake venom," Dr. Huang explained. The venom contains toxic substances like formic acid and neurotoxins, capable of causing not only skin irritation and swelling but also hemolysis, internal bleeding, kidney failure, and fatal shock in severe cases.

Experts warn that while wasps rarely attack unprovoked, they can be drawn to bright colors and strong scents. "When heading outdoors in late summer and autumn, wear neutral-colored clothing and a hat. Avoid using floral-scented perfumes or skincare products." Dr. Huang advised. If a swarm attacks, crouch down, cover your head and neck, and avoid swatting at the insects.

Dr. Le Wenqing from the ICU emphasized that if stung, it's crucial to move away from the hive immediately. Never run or flail—this may provoke more stings. Instead, remove the stinger with a needle or syringe, rinse the wound thoroughly, and use appropriate remedies: baking soda or soapy water for bee stings, and vinegar for wasp stings. Apply a cold compress to reduce pain and swelling, and seek medical help right away—even if symptoms seem minor.

"Many people underestimate the danger of wasp stings and may delay treatment using unproven remedies like breast milk applications," Dr. Le warned. "Proper and timely care is essential to prevent serious complications, especially for allergic individuals."
