On September 6, a social media user raised a question to East China Normal University (ECNU) on Weibo, asking whether a foreign student who had posted multiple videos insulting teachers and classmates on social media was indeed enrolled at the university.

According to online accounts, the student in question allegedly misunderstood a teacher's compliment about her hair due to her limited Chinese proficiency, assuming it was a negative remark, and then proceeded to mock the teacher with offensive nicknames. She also claimed to suffer from bipolar disorder, reportedly returning to her dormitory at 4 a.m., disturbing roommates. The student was said to have repeatedly violated dormitory rules, including accusing roommates of damaging her belongings and harassing them, which led the university to require her to move out of the International Exchange Center dormitory.

Netizens further alleged that the student had received a disciplinary notice from the university. The notice, reportedly issued in Chinese, cited "violating rules on late return, violating nighttime quiet hours, and using inappropriate language that threatened roommates." The penalty was a "serious disciplinary warning and cancellation of on-campus housing."

In response to public concern, ECNU issued a statement on September 7: "Upon verification, the individual was an American student enrolled in a Chinese language program at our university from February 18 to May 19 this year. During this period, the student demonstrated poor academic performance, low attendance, and repeated misconduct. Despite criticism and education, there was no improvement. In accordance with relevant regulations, the university terminated her housing and she subsequently left the university, ending her studies. ECNU strictly upholds admission and academic standards, strengthens daily management, and ensures legality and transparency. Thank you for your attention."
