According to the amendment passed by the National Assembly, individuals who carry and visibly display potentially lethal or dangerous objects—such as knives or blunt tools—without justifiable reasons (such as occupational necessity or carrying the item home after purchase) in public areas like streets or parks may face legal consequences. The penalties include imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 10 million Korean won (approximately USD 7,400).
Since the law took effect, several individuals, including foreign nationals, have been investigated for violations.
In response, the Chinese Embassy in South Korea issued a reminder to Chinese citizens residing in or traveling to South Korea. The embassy advises avoiding carrying knives, hammers, or any items that may be deemed offensive weapons in public places.
If carrying such items is absolutely necessary due to professional or personal reasons (e.g., post-purchase transportation), individuals are urged to keep them properly concealed to avoid legal consequences.
