The Chinese Embassy in South Korea on Monday reminded Chinese citizens in or traveling to South Korea to exercise caution when carrying offensive weapons.
According to the new act, without a legitimate reason (such as for professional use or transporting after purchase), carrying and displaying potentially dangerous weapons that could cause injury or death in public areas like roads or parks—if it causes fear or anxiety among others—may result in imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 10 million won($7,300), according to the embassy.
Since the law took effect, several individuals, including foreigners, have already been investigated for violations.
The Chinese Embassy advises Chinese citizens in South Korea or those planning to visit the country to avoid carrying knives, hammers, or other objects that could be regarded as offensive weapons in public.
