China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) announced on Thursday that it has directed Romoss, Anker, and Xiaomi to recall more than 700,000 power banks identified with safety risks, CCTV News reported.
As of now, Romoss has recalled 167,000 units, issuing refunds totaling 22.84 million yuan. Anker has recalled 565,000 units, refunding 85.66 million yuan to the buyers. Xiaomi has recalled 17,000 units, with refunds reaching 2.7 million yuan, an official with the SAMR told a press conference in Beijing.
The recalls follow multiple power bank fire incidents reported in the first half of 2025. In response, SAMR set up a supervisory task force, dispatched officials to South China's Guangdong Province and East China's Jiangsu Province for on-site investigation, and mobilized regulators across 11 provinces and municipalities to carry out inspections and probes. Altogether, the three companies are required to recall over 1.35 million power banks, said the official.
After Romoss faced a wave of refund requests due to insufficient online store deposit guarantees, SAMR coordinated with relevant departments to resolve the issue. The backlog of refund claims has now been fully cleared, safeguarding the consumers' rights, the official noted.
The SAMR said it has conducted a thorough review of power banks and lithium batteries certified under the China Compulsory Certification (3C) mechanism. Nearly 9,000 certificates have been suspended and more than 600 revoked. Through an online verification system, SAMR has notified major e-commerce platforms, leading to the removal of problematic power banks and the blocking of up to 80,000 related online sales links.
Since the beginning of this year, media outlets have reported multiple incidents of power bank and other lithium batteries catching fire or emitting smoke on public transits.
In a move to ensure aviation safety, the Civil Aviation Administration of China on June 16 issued an emergency notice, stating that, starting from June 28, air passengers will be prohibited from carrying power chargers onto domestic flights if they lack a 3C certification mark, have an unclear 3C mark, or, belong to those recalled models.
SAMR pledged that it will expand defect investigations through consumer complaints and other channels, ensure companies recall all defective products as required, and strictly punish those that conceal defect products or fail to carry out effective recall measures, said the official.
