On August 7, WeChat's official public account published a statement addressing a long-standing question: Why doesn't WeChat have a read receipt feature?

The conclusion was clear: WeChat has never had a read receipt feature, and it never will.

Whether or not WeChat would introduce read receipts has been a topic of ongoing public debate. Many users have voiced opposition to the feature, citing concerns that it could expose reading behavior and create unnecessary social pressure.

In the comment section of the post, one user remarked, "The day WeChat introduces read receipts is the day I uninstall the app — no joke." WeChat responded directly: "That day will never come."

However, there are also users who support the idea. Project managers tracking updates or individuals anxiously awaiting a reply from a romantic interest are among those who see potential benefits in such a feature.

Earlier this year, some media outlets contacted Tencent's customer service about the issue. The response confirmed that WeChat currently has no plans to support read receipts.

Tencent's Director of Public Relations, Zhang Jun, also reiterated the company's stance in a post, stating that the topic had been addressed in the past. "Read receipts add psychological burden and social pressure for message recipients," he explained. "That's why WeChat has firmly chosen not to include this feature from the very beginning — and this will not change in the future."

As early as 2018, during the WeChat Open Class conference, the development team explained their design philosophy: to provide users with a stress-free communication experience.

With WeChat once again clarifying its position, the debate around read receipts may finally be put to rest.
