US demands up to $15,000 visa bond for tourists

The Trump administration is moving to tighten entry rules with a new policy that could make it harder for citizens of certain countries to get a visa.

As part of its ongoing immigration restrictions, the administration has introduced a one-year pilot program requiring some applicants to pay a $15,000 (€12,901) bond.

Announced in the Federal Register on Tuesday and set to begin on August 20, the measure aims to ensure visitors leave the US once their authorized stay ends.

The US State Department said the bond will be refunded only after the visa holder departs the country and the visa expires.

The pilot will initially apply to Zambia and Malawi, targeting nationals from countries with high rates of overstaying or limited monitoring capabilities.

It will cover both tourist and business visas.

Official data shows that more than 500,000 people overstayed visas in 2023.

In recent months, the Trump administration has introduced several visa restrictions that have disproportionately affected African nations.
