Guangzhou Customs has uncovered a major case of currency smuggling at Baiyun International Airport.
Recently, Guangzhou Customs officers at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport intercepted a passenger attempting to bring in an excessive amount of undeclared foreign currency. A total of €256,900 in cash—equivalent to more than 2.12 million yuan—was seized on site.
The incident occurred when customs officials were inspecting an inbound flight. A passenger who opted for the "nothing to declare" channel was flagged after abnormal images appeared during baggage X-ray screening. Upon further inspection, bundles of euro banknotes were found concealed in the traveler's luggage. The total amount, €256,900, far exceeded the legal threshold and had not been declared to customs.
Customs authorities issued a reminder that, under relevant laws and regulations, carrying cash across the border is subject to strict limits. Inbound passengers must declare to customs if they are carrying more than 20,000 yuan in Chinese currency or foreign currency exceeding the equivalent of 5,000 U.S. dollars, and they must use the "declaration channel" when clearing customs.
