A shocking picture showing a woman walking her calm three-year-old daughter to a hospital with a fruit knife embedded in the child's head has gone viral in China, triggering intense discussion online.
The incident took place in Kunming, Yunnan province, and came to public attention on August 15 after the image circulated on social media. The mother, identified by her surname Hu, was photographed holding her daughter's hand as they entered Dongchuan People's Hospital. The girl had a 15cm fruit knife visibly lodged in the side of her head, just above her right ear.
Initial reports claimed the knife had been thrown accidentally while Hu was changing bed sheets. However, hospital staff later disclosed that Hu admitted she had picked up the knife in an attempt to scare her tantrum-throwing daughter and accidentally struck her.
Despite the alarming situation, both mother and daughter appeared composed as they arrived at the hospital. Hu reportedly tried to pull the knife out but failed, and instead decided to walk her daughter to the hospital rather than call for emergency services.
Doctors successfully removed the knife, and the child is now in stable condition. Medical experts explained that the softness of a young child's skull may have prevented immediate fatal injury. They also stressed that not attempting to remove the knife was the right decision under the circumstances.
Authorities officially ruled the incident an accident, with no signs of intentional harm. Nevertheless, the widely circulated image has sparked a wave of criticism on Chinese social media. One user wrote, "Is this mother even normal? The police should investigate further." Another commented, "Poor girl. She walked so calmly. I'm just glad she's okay."
