Chinese Man Dies After Hotel Tryst; Family Sues for Compensation, Gets Fraction of Requested Amount
A Chinese court has ruled that the family of a 66-year-old married man who died following a sexual encounter in a hotel with his lover is entitled to compensation — but only a small fraction of what they originally sought.
The man, surnamed Zhou, died from a heart attack on July 14, 2024, shortly after having sex with a former colleague, surnamed Zhuang, in a hotel in Pingnan County, Guangxi. Medical reports confirmed the cause of death as acute myocardial infarction.
Zhou's wife and son later filed a lawsuit against both Zhuang and the hotel, claiming they failed to act in time to save him. They demanded a total of 620,000 yuan (US$86,000), which included 550,000 yuan in damages and 70,000 yuan in funeral expenses.
The court, however, determined that Zhou's pre-existing health conditions — including hypertension and a prior stroke — made him primarily responsible for his own death. Zhuang was found to hold only secondary liability, as she was unaware of his medical history.
The ruling also criticized Zhuang for leaving the hotel to take her own blood pressure medication instead of seeking help immediately, which may have cost valuable time in saving Zhou.
Moreover, the court stated her involvement in an extramarital affair with a married man violated public morals.
In the end, Zhuang was ordered to pay only 62,000 yuan (around US$8,600), approximately 10% of the amount the family had requested.
The hotel was not held liable, as the death occurred inside a private room rather than in a public area.
