The advisory follows a recent incident where a newly arrived Chinese student was detained by Swedish authorities after using a mobile phone to translate and photograph a sign at a local facility.

Authorities suspected the student of illegally photographing a protected sensitive site. In Sweden, such incidents can lead to criminal investigation, prosecution, and penalties including fines or imprisonment.

The consulate emphasized the gravity of such violations, urging all Chinese nationals in its jurisdiction to remain vigilant and respect local regulations. Citizens are reminded to pay close attention to signage indicating restricted areas—such as "No Photography" or "Do Not Enter"—particularly around military installations, law enforcement agencies, airports, and customs areas.

The incident has sparked discussions online. Some expressed confusion, asking, "Is even photographing a warning sign forbidden?" and "If the sign wasn't in English, isn't it understandable that someone might not realize?"

Others argued, "Even if you can't read the language, you can still recognize a 'No Photography' symbol," and "Shouldn't international students at least be familiar with basic local rules and signs?"
