At the 27th Pet Fair Asia, held from August 20–24 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, visitors noticed a Mexican hairless dog with an elaborate "Green Dragon on the left, White Tiger on the right" tattoo across its back. The canine was also accessorized with a gold chain and wristwatch—an unsettling sight that quickly ignited outrage.
The dog's owner confidently encouraged photo-taking, even lifting the pet by the scruff while claiming it felt no pain due to supposedly low sensitivity. Attendees and netizens, however, strongly disagreed. Many remarked that the dog appeared visibly distressed, reluctant to eat, and possibly injured.
One social media commenter bluntly criticized, "Tattooing means nothing to the dog!" Others expressed sympathy, calling the act meaningless or even abusive.
Responding to the widespread backlash, pet fair organizers barred the owner from bringing the tattooed dog back into the event to avoid further controversy and harm to the animal's welfare.
Mr. Lv, the tattoo artist behind the design, revealed the dog's owner approached him in 2024, claiming the pet had a low pain threshold and insisting on the tattoo, believing it would make the dog "look cooler."
Concerned about the dog's recovery, Mr. Lv arranged for the procedure to take place in a pet hospital, where a veterinarian administered anesthesia. He emphasized that the process was intended to be painless and took precautions like using single-use disposable tools, which were discarded immediately afterward.
However, after seeing the public reaction, he expressed regret and said he now understands the seriousness of the incident.
He plans to issue a public apology, stating any harm caused was unintentional.
