Typhoon Danas Leaves 2 Dead, Set to Impact Shanghai Amid Sudden Path Shift
Typhoon "Danas" has already left a deadly mark after making landfall in Taiwan's Chiayi County just before midnight, resulting in two deaths and widespread power outages affecting over 580,000 households. As of July 7, Danas has weakened to a strong tropical storm, now located about 290 km south of Wenling, Zhejiang Province, with wind speeds near its center reaching up to 28 m/s (10th level on the Beaufort scale).

According to China's National Meteorological Center, Danas is expected to continue drifting north-northeast before sharply veering west-southwest early on July 8. It is forecasted to make a second landfall along the coast between Taizhou in Zhejiang and Ningde in Fujian by the afternoon or evening of July 8, possibly as a tropical or strong tropical storm (wind speeds 18–25 m/s).
Impact on Shanghai: Strong Winds, Heavy Rains Possible
Although Shanghai is not the storm's projected landfall point, it is expected to be significantly affected by Danas' outer rainbands. Intermittent showers are forecast for both July 7 and 8, with the heaviest rainfall likely on the 8th, when localized torrential downpours may occur.
Starting Monday morning (July 8), winds in Shanghai will intensify. Inland districts will experience gusts of 7–8 on the Beaufort scale. Eastern and southern coastal areas, including the Yangtze River estuary, Yangshan Port, and other marine zones, will likely see gusts reaching 8–9.
Meteorologists caution that if the storm's landfall shifts further north—toward Xiangshan or even higher latitudes—the impact on Shanghai could intensify, bringing heavier rains and stronger winds. In such a scenario, peak gusts could reach 9–10 in coastal areas and 8 inland, with potential urban flooding and transport disruptions.
Local Government and Public Safety Measures
In response to the shifting forecast, Zhejiang Province has upgraded its typhoon emergency response to Level III. While Shanghai hasn't initiated the same level of alert, local authorities are closely monitoring the storm's track and advise residents to prepare emergency supplies, secure outdoor objects, and avoid coastal activities.
The city's weather will remain unsettled throughout the week, with Danas' influence coinciding with a northward-moving subtropical high. As a result, the oppressive summer heat in Shanghai will ease slightly, with daily highs stabilizing around 32–34°C. Mid- to late-week, the city will see alternating clouds, sunshine, and occasional showers—making umbrellas a daily necessity.
