Tsunami Yellow Warning: Coastal Areas Including Shanghai Could Be Impacted by Hazardous Effects
The Tsunami Warning Center under the Ministry of Natural Resources has issued a Yellow Tsunami Warning. At 07:24 AM on July 30, 2025 (Beijing Time), an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the offshore area of the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula (52.53°N, 160.16°E), at a depth of 20 kilometers.

According to the latest monitoring and analysis from the Tsunami Warning Center, the earthquake has triggered a tsunami, which is expected to have hazardous impacts on the coastal regions of Shanghai, Zhoushan South, Taipei East, Pingdong East and West, Taitung South, and Hualien, as well as the Yilan coastline.
Specifically, for Shanghai, the forecast predicts that the tsunami will reach at 19:09 (BJT), with a maximum wave amplitude of 30-100 cm.
As of 11 AM, real-time monitoring has reported that a tsunami buoy near the earthquake's epicenter has recorded waves of 90 cm. Tsunami waves of 30-50 cm have been detected along the coasts of Japan and Russia.
It is expected that the tsunami will reach the Taiwan coastline by 13:30 and then hit the Zhejiang and Shanghai coastal areas between 17:00 and 20:00.
The predicted wave heights are 60 cm for Taiwan's eastern coast, 40 cm for northern Zhejiang, and 30 cm for Shanghai.
In response, the Ministry of Natural Resources has initiated a Level 2 marine disaster emergency response for Zhejiang and Shanghai at 10:00 AM on July 30. The Tsunami Warning Center will continue to update and release tsunami warnings, and local agencies are advised to enhance monitoring, analysis, and disaster assessment efforts.
This earthquake is considered one of the strongest in the Kamchatka region since 1952, with a magnitude of 8.7, as confirmed by the Kamchatka Branch of Geophysical Survey of Russia Academy of Sciences. Following the event, multiple tsunami warnings were issued.
