A Beijing court has set a precedent by ordering a company to pay overtime compensation to an engineer for mandatory after-hours online training sessions. The case, which has drawn significant public attention, involved an individual known as Wang, who was employed by an engineering firm from July 2020 to June 2023.

Wang sought over 80,000 yuan (US$11,000) in overtime pay, claiming his employer required him to participate in training via platforms like Ding Ding and WeChat outside regular working hours. The company had a policy that non-attendance would result in a "voluntary donation" of 200 yuan (US$28).

The company contested the claim, stating that online training did not constitute overtime and that participation was not compulsory. However, the court found that the training sessions, which Wang was required to attend, encroached on his personal time, thus qualifying as overtime.

The court also noted instances where Wang logged on significantly later than the scheduled start times, which influenced the final compensation amount. The company was ultimately ordered to pay Wang 19,000 yuan (US$2,600) for overtime.

This landmark ruling highlights the importance of recognizing and compensating for work performed outside of normal working hours, even in digital formats. It serves as a reminder to companies to ensure fair labor practices and respect employees' personal time.
