The long-awaited "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" plan is set to roll out this year, Guangdong's public security department announced on Wednesday. This initiative will let eligible Guangdong private cars drive to Hong Kong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, parking at automated lots or entering the city directly.
Currently, Guangdong and Hong Kong authorities are finalizing details and ramping up preparations, aiming to boost cross-border integration.
This new scheme mirrors the successful "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" plan, launched on July 1, 2023. That program lets Hong Kong private cars enter Guangdong without applying for a mainland license plate. Since then, over 100,000 Hong Kong cars have made the trip, fueling economic and people-to-people ties.

Hong Kong's transport chief, Mable Chan, revealed on Wednesday that the new southbound plan will likely start in November, with a daily quota of 100 vehicles. Chan visited Guangzhou on Monday to discuss the plan with Guangdong officials. They also explored ways to improve the existing northbound scheme.
Chan noted the northbound plan's success, with over 100,000 vehicles participating and the bridge seeing record traffic—450,000 trips in May alone. For two years, both sides have been refining the northbound plan and prepping for the southbound one, including setting up automated parking near the bridge for seamless transfers and immigration.
